Etruscan Architecture and Art: The Origins of Tuscan Design Style

Posted By Mary Freeland on January 15, 2010

Ever wondered where the distinct culture and style of Tuscany came from? Well, to start, the architecture, art, and lifestyle of Tuscany is deeply rooted its rich history and past. In fact, the word “Tuscany” is directly derived the name Etruscan, one of the oldest civilizations on the Italian peninsula. Today’s modern Tuscan design, culture, and way of life directly stem from aspects of this ancient society.

Among the first inhabitants of what is now Italy, the Etruscans thrived from about 1200 B.C. until their later assimilation into the Roman Empire. Etruscan civilization flourished during a time of conquest and war: with the Gauls attacking from the north and the Romans from the south, Etruscan architecture focused first on defense and then on aesthetics. Built on hilltops, typical Etruscan cities featured defensive moats and thick walls. These substantial walls are echoed in the thick masonry of today’s Tuscan villas and homes. Homes for common folk were built out of readily available natural materials like wood and clay, with stone construction being reserved for forts and temples.

But the Etruscans weren’t just uncultured warriors. Much of their architecture reflects a Greek influence that can still be seen in the arched gateways to their walled cities and the simple columns that adorn a few of the remaining examples of late Etruscan architecture. Drawing on the world around them, the Etruscans also created beautiful works of art. Many homes may have featured colorful frescoes and detailed, life-like terracotta sculptures have been discovered in their tombs.

Eventually incorporated into the Roman Empire, Etruscan civilization lives on in the colors, natural materials, and strong stone architectural history of the Tuscan countryside—all elements important in today’s Tuscan design style.
