Turquoise and Azure: the Sea and Sky in Tuscan Style and Design

Posted By Mary Freeland on March 12, 2010

Like the reds and oranges of the fields and earth, the blues of Tuscan décor are derived from the landscape itself. Taking their inspirations from the two primary blue palettes of Italy, the sea and sky, Tuscan blues offer a rich spectrum of cool colors for home décor accents, furnishing, and even paint tones. Oftentimes Tuscan palettes get stuck on the colors of the earth—golden fields, green trees, and red soil—and forget the balancing tones of the calming sea and sky. For a truly harmonious Tuscan home, it’s important to integrate all the colors of the Tuscan landscape, including blues, into your design.

The Turquoise, Aqua, and Teal of the Mediterranean Sea

If you’ve ever spent time watching the sea, you know it can be any one of myriad shades of turquoise and aquamarine. From varying weather patterns to water depths, the color of the sea has many moods, hues, and tints. You’ll find every one of these represented in Tuscan décor, often as accent colors in earthenware dishes, vases, and other decorative accents. For example, traditional Italian Majolica pottery typically includes at least one teal tone, and frequently includes several contrasting shades of blue.

The Azure of the Tuscan Sky

Just as with the sea, the sky has a plethora of moods and tones. Ranging from the deep azure of the cloudless Tuscan sky to pale blue and even stormy gray, the blues of the heavens offer a veritable rainbow of inspiration for Tuscan art and interior design. Combined with the greeny-blues of the sea, the sapphire, indigo, and cobalt blues of the sky provide beautiful contrast to each other and the rest of the earth tone palette of your Mediterranean décor.
